Building an Immersive Sound Studio from Scratch
Studio construction, acoustic treatment, room analysis, and much more
Built Summer 2024 for Tiffin University
Over the summer of 2024, I had the opportunity to design and build a new 9.1.6 immersive audio studio at Tiffin University during my employment there. The first of its kind for the university, this studio required the complete renovation of a former classroom into a professional grade Dolby Atmos sound system with 19 speakers for cinema, gaming, and immersive music of all kinds.
My close collaborator, Colton Fleure, and myself collectively put in over 400 hours designing, installing, testing, and calibrating "Studio B" before it's completion in fall of 2024. We personally completed every step of the process with approval and support from Brad Rees, our project supervisor. This included thorough budgeting and gear selection, room analysis and acoustic treatment (including building additional treatment ourselves), and minor construction modifications and installation of equipment.
Now, this space is available for student use and is allowing the commercial music program to spearhead new learning programs based around immersive audio. See progress and final pictures below! (final shots taken by JD)
